Myrtle Scharrer Betz
Yesteryear I Lived in Paradise
Winner of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Statewide Award for 2009. This account of growing up on Caladesi Island by the only child ever born there captures the natural wonders, discomforts, challenges, and joys of pioneer life on a Florida West Coast barrier island. Betz narrates the story from when her father, Henry Scharrer, first arrived in America from Switzerland in 1883 until his death in 1934. More than 130 historic illustrations and a comprehensive timeline complete the story.
Myrtle Scharrer Betz (1895–1992) was a resident of Caladesi Island in the early 1900s and authored a book about her experiences. She was the daughter of 1880s homesteader Henry Scharrer who lived with her on the island. At the age of 87, Betz wrote the book, Yesteryear I Lived in Paradise (University of Tampa Press, 2007) telling of her life on the barrier island. She is listed as a Great Floridian, a title bestowed upon citizens in the state of Florida by the Florida Department of State.
