Submissions to Studies in the Fantastic are accepted on a rolling basis, with periodic calls for special issues. Please read our publication ethics statement before submitting.
Guidelines
Manuscripts should be 6,000-12,000 words in length. Please include a separate title page with an abstract and author information to facilitate peer review. The abstract should be a unique summary of the article, not a duplicate of your introduction.
Please note that we follow COPE Guidelines on AI usage: “Authors who use AI tools in the writing of a manuscript, production of images or graphical elements of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data, must be transparent in disclosing in the Materials and Methods (or similar section) of the paper how the AI tool was used and which tool was used. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, even those parts produced by an AI tool, and are thus liable for any breach of publication ethics.”
We do not expect authors to convert formatting prior to submission. However, after a submission is approved through our peer review process and before a contract is extended, we will provide a Style Guide and ask authors to bring their essays into alignment with our standards, which include MLA citations and discursive endnotes.
Any images must be high-resolution (300 dpi) and submitted separately from manuscripts. It is the author’s responsibility to secure permissions prior to publication.
Please send all submissions and inquiries to fantastic@ut.edu.
Special Issues
We welcome proposals for guest-edited special issues of Studies in the Fantastic (e.g., Issue 9: “Weird Temporalities,” edited by Jordan S. Carroll and Alison Sperling; and Issue 7: “No More Room in Hell,” edited by Sonia Lupher). If you are interested in proposing a special issue, please send the following materials to fantastic@ut.edu:
- A bio for editor(s)
- CV for editor(s), which should include employment; education; publications (i.e., books, reviews, journal articles, and book chapters); presentations; and relevant teaching experiences.
- A statement sharing the purpose of the issue and the questions it seeks to answer. Include whether this issue will invite scholars in the field or do a general CFP to solicit submissions.
- Expected timeline for completion. Note that guest editors are expected to review and approve complete essay drafts before submitting manuscripts to SITF for blind peer review.
