When Andy flees South Carolina for Alaska, he first looks for work and then for membership in a church that fits his fundamentalist beliefs. In writing Forgiveness Is the Heart’s Big Project, Robert Kinerk drew on his years growing up in Ketchikan, where he worked as a logger, newspaper reporter, volunteer fireman, and clerk in his father’s grocery store. Those same experiences fed the writing of his novel Mr. Sweetcheeks in Alaska; his short story collection, Tales from the Territory: Stories of Southeast Alaska; and The Fish Pirate’s Daughter, Alaska’s longest running play, on stage for summertime performances since 1966. In addition to having sixteen plays produced, Kinerk has published seven children’s book as well as numerous short stories and poems.
